Finding Answers

This past week we went to the hospital for many tests. The tests consisted of a chest CT, chest x-ray, swallow study, genetic testing and a bronchoscope. While this may sound like a medical dictionary to some, this is a normal day for me in motherhood. My child as I had mentioned earlier has been sick since he was born. This past week though we finally have some answers.

At the start of our appointment we did not know if we were going to be able to afford this appointment. We have been struggling with our insurance since day one of my son being in the hospital. This is something that has taken a financial toll on our family. But if emptying my wallet to find something for my son is what it takes then I will make it work.

Watching my son go under anesthesia for these tests was one of the hardest things I have done as a mom. I held back tears so my son would not be scared as he went under. But as soon as I left the room I let it all out. No matter who was looking at me, I felt like no matter what the tears would not stop.

After my son was done with his tests we finally had some answers. He has a floppy airway. This means that from now until the age of 5 he will always have breathing issues. Because of this also he is more perceptive to disease. After the previous specialist we had brought him to did not diagnose him correctly my son has now had floppy airways for a year, and thus bringing on a lung infection. We have started medications and treatments. For now we will not have to be in another hospitalization, unless the antibiotics do not break down the infection.

The fact of the matter is that we have a diagnosis though. We can now start treatment and work on a way to make my son healthier and able to breathe. This also means that we have to continue treatments throughout the day everyday. With this we will be changing from a daycare to a nanny. My sister will be starting out with us to help us adjust to the new routine. Starting now we will be able to make my sons life a little easier, and that is the best present I could have asked for.
